Back to Preparing for the Ball

What to Expect at the Faelight Ball

The Faelight Ball is an evening where story and celebration intertwine.

Set within a world of Victorian elegance and fae enchantment, the night blends fine dining, live music, dancing, and theatrical moments into a single, immersive experience. Lantern light glows, music drifts through the halls, and guests from both realms gather beneath an air of beauty, intrigue, and quiet tension.

The story is not background: it is woven deliberately through the evening.

An Immersive Experience - At Your Own Pace

The Faelight Ball is immersive, but it is never demanding.

You choose how deeply you wish to engage. Some guests delight in conversation, character, and playful interaction. Others prefer to observe, dance, listen, and take in the atmosphere. Both approaches - and everything in between - are entirely welcome.

There is:

  • no script to memorize

  • no role you are required to play

  • no moment where you will be put on the spot

You may participate, politely decline, or simply enjoy the evening as it unfolds around you. There is no wrong way to attend.

How the Evening Unfolds

The night follows a gentle rhythm, guided throughout by hosts, performers, and music.

You can expect:

  • A warm arrival and welcome

  • Time to mingle, explore, and settle into the space

  • A seated dinner accompanied by live music

  • Dancing and open-floor celebration

  • Moments when the story steps briefly into the foreground

  • A shared turning point, followed by joyful revelry

At no point are guests required to “solve” anything or perform. When the story advances, it does so clearly and collectively; with guidance always provided.

Performers, Characters & Interaction

Throughout the evening, you may encounter performers portraying members of the fae court, wandering tricksters, musicians, dancers, or diviners.

These performers are there to:

  • welcome you

  • add color and texture to the world

  • offer optional moments of interaction

You are always free to engage, to listen, or to gently decline and move on. Boundaries are respected at all times, and performers are trained to follow your lead.

If you are ever unsure or have a question, staff and ushers are always nearby to assist.

Dress, Movement & Comfort

Guests are encouraged - but never required - to dress in Victorian-inspired formalwear, fae attire, or a blend of the two. Many choose elegant gowns, tailored suits, masks, or subtle fantasy details, while others arrive in modern formalwear with a touch of whimsy.

Comfort is just as important as style.

The Faelight Ball takes place across several historic buildings and outdoor spaces at Discovery Harbour in Penetanguishene, Ontario. While the main ball and seated dinner are held indoors at Captain Roberts’ Table, other elements of the evening - including the Divination Parlour, Night Market, and bar - are spread across adjacent buildings and a covered outdoor patio.

Because guests will be moving between spaces throughout the night, we recommend planning for:

  • walking between nearby buildings

  • time spent both indoors and outdoors

  • dancing, standing, and leisurely wandering

Although the event takes place in mid-May, weather near the harbour can be unpredictable. Layers, wraps, shawls, cloaks, or outerwear that complements your ensemble are encouraged. Coat check will be available on-site, so you may dress for comfort without needing to carry items throughout the evening.

Comfortable footwear, weather-conscious choices, and mobility-friendly attire are always welcome; elegance and ease are meant to go hand in hand.

Gentle Traditions & Touchstones

To enhance the atmosphere, the evening includes a few light traditions inspired by historical balls and fae folklore.

You may encounter:

  • Dance cards, used as keepsakes or to mark dances

  • A themed market and divination spaces to explore at leisure

  • Special “Fae Coins” to be used for purchases at The Night Market, Divination Parlour, and bar - or kept as souvenirs

These elements are meant to add charm and texture; not complexity. Guidance is always available, and participation is optional.

If you’d like to prepare further, you may explore the costuming guide, the setting of the world, or the stories as they are remembered. Or you may simply arrive and let the night unfold.
