His Grace, The Lord Elgwin, Master of the Hunt

The Firstborn of a Younger Generation

Before she was ever called The Willow Queen, before lanterns breathed faelight into mortal streets, before the Veil was torn and the realms collided, lived Elgwin: already renowned, already respected, already ancient in the way only the young blessed (or burdened) with old souls can be.

Though counted among the younger generation of fae, Elgwin was one of the firstborn of that age. Even in youth he carried himself with the gravity of a seasoned elder, and his calmness, restraint, and uncanny foresight marked him from the beginning as something singular.

Where others of his cohort were tempestuous, impulsive, or wild as new spring storms, Elgwin was the quiet after the thunder. The steady breath of the forest. The silence before the arrow flies.

His prowess in the hunt was unmatched. From the moment he first took up bow and blade he moved with the precision of a creature who understood the world’s rhythms instinctively, and legend spread quickly of the young fae whose footsteps never disturbed the moss, whose arrow always found truth and whose presence seemed made not of flesh but of autumn air. Thus he earned his renown and at a remarkably young age; the revered title of Master of the Hunt. Not merely a hunter of beasts, but a keeper of balance. A steward of life and death. And increasingly, a leader.

The Diminishing and the Burden of Grief

When the diminishing began, Elgwin felt the losses deeply. Many of his peers faltered under the weight of their grief… some withdrew into sorrow, others into fury. But Elgwin, endured.

It was not that he felt less. It was that he carried more. He bore his grief with the same stoic resolve that had always been his nature. He marched forward, refusing to let despair blind him to duty. In an age shaken by uncertainty and fear, he became a pillar among the young fae, a calm and capable voice amid growing chaos. And it was during this time - this fragile, unraveling chapter of fae history – that he first truly saw her.

She was not yet a queen, not yet a symbol of hope or sorrow, not yet a name whispered across realms. But even then, she was extraordinary.

There was a tempest beneath her skin: beauty, brilliance, anguish, and power braided together in ways that others could not understand. Elgwin saw the storm clouds behind her eyes long before they darkened, sensed the fracture forming in her heart, the pressure building, the chaos she tried so desperately to cage.

And she, in turn, saw him: his quiet strength, his unwavering composure, the solace he offered simply by existing. Duty drew him to her, but affection swiftly followed. And affection, in time, blossomed into a love as deep and enduring as the roots of the oldest oak, intertwined so fully that even the fiercest storms could not tear them apart.

He courted her patiently, steadfastly, tenderly; never demanding, never pressing, by simply being: being near, being steady, being a safe place for her to fall when everything else threatened to collapse.

Their love was not quick nor easy, nor born of fleeting passion. It was a slow-burning flame, quiet but unyielding, a devotion that threaded itself through seasons and sorrow alike. And in time, they wed. And though she was not yet crowned, she became his heart’s sovereign all the same.

The Tempest and the Shattering

As the diminishing deepened, she grew heavier with grief. Elgwin felt it like a storm gathering – felt it in her breath, her trembling hands, the silence between her words. He became her shadow, her quiet sentinel; easing her burdens where he could, sheltering her from threats both seen and unseen. But he could not shield her from the storm within.

On the fateful night that would forever change the realms, Elgwin felt her slip away from him. He followed her into the heart of the forest, the wind rising wild and hungry, answering her anguish with its own.

He saw the tempest take shape around her, saw her surrender to the power unleashed. He saw the Veil – at all times ancient, sacred, immutable – shatter beneath the force of her grief. And though he tried to reach her, the storm would not allow it.

Magic flayed the air, the world bent, and even the Master of the Hunt could not pierce the wall of raw, devastating power that surrounded her. So he stood at the edges of the maelstrom – helpless, horrified, faithful – until the storm finally swallowed itself.

At dawn, when the forest lay broken and she finally collapsed, he was the one who held her… asking no questions, offering no judgement, simply gathering her into his arms to let her weep. And from that sunrise onward, he never left her side.

Consort, Guardian, Interceptor

In the mortal realm, she eventually accepted the mantle of The Willow Queen. And he became His Grace, Lord Elgwin, known to all as her Consort; protector and counselor. But what others did not see was that more importantly, he acted as her emotional anchor, and the quiet watcher of the storms still brewing inside her.

He intercepts words that would wound her, conflicts that might ignite her, and threats that might unravel her fragile peace. He reads the first flicker of darkness in her gaze, moving to meet it before she must face it alone.

She does not always understand the depth of his vigilance, not how closely he guards her. But he does not serve for gratitude, he serves because he loves her: fiercely, unconditionally, with a loyalty deeper than roots and older than the first dawn of their world.

She does not know he witnessed the truth of the Veil’s destruction, so he must carry that burden silently, faithfully, as he carries all her storms.

Elgwin at the Faelight Ball

To the world, he is the Master of the Hunt, the Queen’s Consort, a formidable presence of charm and coiled strength. To her, he is the calm beneath her chaos; the steady hand at her back; the quiet warning before her emotions spiral; and the one who will bleed before he lets harm reach her.

And tonight – when tensions rise, factions stir, and the fate of two realms hangs in balance – he is prepared to stand as he always has: At her side. In her shadow. With her storm in his bones.
